Part 1 – Performance Edition
If you’ve been using a windows computer or laptop for more than a year, chances are that you are already annoyed by slow start-up speed, viruses or over complicated software.
While windows is the best operating system in 2015, you still need to manually find and install the right windows software for every specific need.
By using these relatively rare PC apps, you can re-discover the true potential of your windows computer. The best part – All 10 tools are free!
This is my secret writing weapon. Evernote is hands down the best note taking app out there. It looks beautiful, lets you create multiple notebooks, automatically syncs on all of your devices, and has the best search functionality I’ve encountered so far.
Repeat after me – “I am mad as hell with Adobe notifications and I’m not going to take it anymore”. Admit it, while Adobe PDF reader is a good software, its annoying update notifications have been driving you crazy for years.
If you are a basic user who needs to simply read or create PDF files, Foxit PDF reader is best replacement to Adobe. It’s looks similar, is easy to use and is non-annoying. It’s time to break up with Adobe; dump it and don’t look back.
Darkroom is a blessing from the Matrix all around us. This notepad app runs full screen and stares at you with shame until you finish your job productively. Just kidding. But seriously, this is the best distraction free notepad out there.
This is an amazing tool for those times when you just need to shut up and get work completed. Best part – it auto saves! So your work will be waiting for you right where you left it.
4. Ommwriter (Paid)
Ommwriter is the only paid app in this article. Why? Because of the writing environment it creates. Have you ever wanted to go into a peaceful, zen like mental state while listening to soothing instrumental music? Of course you have!
Now imagine if you could get all that + solitude + a constant buzz of creativity while you write without any distractions to bother you. That’s what this app does. If Darkroom looked like a scene from the Matrix movie to you, Ommwriter will make you feel serene, clean and beautiful.
Most people have some sort of virus in their computer. Maybe you don’t…or at least you think so. Viruses can be a huge problem. If you have an irrational fear of unknown pen-drives, you know what I’m talking about.
I’ve tried 90% of the top free antivirus softwares – Norton, Kaspersky, AVG, Avira etc. What I’ve found is that when it comes to these 3 factors
- Effectiveness – Removes and protects from all viruses.
- Lightweight – Doesn’t slow down or heat up windows while in use.
- Non-annoying – Silently updates without displaying random popups.
360 Internet Security wins as the the most convenient anti-virus software. Get it, run it and be virus (and tension) free.
What is a malware? How are they different from viruses? Is an anti-virus software not enough? You probably don’t know or don’t care about the answers.
If you just want to run a safe windows computer, without having to worry about “malware, spyware, phishing etc.”, install Malwarebytes. It does what it promises. It’s that simple.
SPEED UP WINDOWS
I believe in privacy. I believe that I should be able to control who has access to my data and files. Hence, I do not let ad networks and personalization services track me all over the web.
I do this is by deleting cookies that get saved on my computer every time I open a web browser. Bleachbit is a powerful privacy tool that resets junk created by other softwares and speeds up your system.
Be warned – If you allow Gmail, Facebook and other websites save to your passwords on your browser for days, this software is NOT for you. It will delete all saved passwords from your browser.
CCleaner is a more user friendly alternative to Bleachbit. It explains what each option does to your privacy and let’s you choose which service gets access to your information.
Using this software can help you save gbs of space in the long run. I highly recommend this tool for newbies. Remember to run it once a week to get the most of it.
SAVE DISK SPACE
Uninstalling unused software from time to time lets you save space, clean up junk and free CPU resources. Did you know that all programs leave residual files on your system even after being un-installed?
Revo un-installer lets you delete all traces of your un-installed softwares from your computer. In the near future, I’m hoping this becomes a default feature for all un-installs across all operating systems (Windows, Andriod, iOS etc).
Ever wanted to delete huge files like TV shows, movies or games from your computer but didn’t know where they are located on your computer? I’ve been there and I know that having an over loaded harddisk sucks.
Windirstat is a software that lets you visualize the files of your computer based on their size. Big files appear as big blocks and small ones as tiny boxes. You can then click on a block and go directly to the folder.
When you save files on your computer, they get scattered all across your harddisk. Over time, having too many scattered files in your harddisk can slow down your PC and eat up precious space.
Defragging your PC from time to time helps you get back some of the space from your harddisk. I recommend that you run this program once a month. Especially if your harddisk size is less than 500 Gb.
That’s it! Once you’ve installed these tools, your windows PC will instantly become faster, cleaner and virus free.
Have you used any of these tools? Which tool was the most useful to you? Let me know in the comments section below.
